Letterpress...

...is the original form of mass communication. The Internet of 1439. Devised by Johannes Gutenberg in Heidelberg, Germany, it reigned supreme for over 500 years before modern communication rendered it commercially redundant.

Until now.

Modern letterpress is a simple and elegant process of plate and paper, ink and pressure. But the secret to beautiful letterpress is in the nuanced approach of combining these elements to create pure poetry on paper.

I'd Letterpress The Shit Out Of That

An experimental and irreverent lettering and letterpress exhibition.

I'd Letterpress The Shit Out Of That was devised in the Gold Coast Airport departure lounge. Naturally.

Typism had just wrapped for its second year. A conference featuring a swag of talented type and lettering artists sharing their skills and their stories, and a couple of them were waiting for planes home. Someone said something about letterpress and an exhibition was born.

Lettering and letterpress share a lot of common ground. Both straddle a 0.25pt line between commercial design and fine art. We are designers and we are artists and we view the world through the lens of our work. This exhibition celebrates and expresses both the collaborative nature of the two crafts, and the way in which we each tackle the day as eight letterers and one letterpress printer. Featuring: Luke Lucas, Carla Hackett, Dave Foster, Jasmine Dowling, Jess Cruickshank, Barry Spencer, Jamie Clarke and Dominique Falla.

The exhibition features an original piece by each artist, letterpress printed in limited edition.

Opening night at Work-Shop, Fitzroy featured hand-lettering and letterpress demonstrations. The exhibition continues online, where you can purchase a print.

Letter Skills Pay The Bills by Luke Lucas and Saint Gertrude was awarded a 2016 Australian Print Industries Award for excellence in print and typography.
